Citrine is a variety of quartz, whose yellow color is due to the presence of minute quantities of iron hydroxides that it contains.
Its name comes from the Latin "citrus", which means lemon, because its acid yellow color reminds that of the lemon...
The citrus color of natural citrine can range from pale yellow to golden orange, yellow, dark yellow, yellow-orange and rarely orange. The orange-madere or reddish-brown color is reserved for synthetic citrines.
Like rock crystal (transparent) or amethyst (violet), citrine is a quartz used since antiquity in jewelry. This is why we find antique jewelry with citrines.
Natural deposits of citrine are found mainly in the United States, Brazil, Spain, Uruguay and Madagascar and are rare. A 1180 carat citrine from Brazil is on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
Most citrines on the market are heated amethyst or smoky quartz. Their hue varies according to the heat treatment (at 470°C the Brazilian amethyst, initially purple, becomes light yellow; and at 550°C it becomes dark yellow). We speak then of citrines of synthesis.
Citrine pairs beautifully with rose or yellow gold to brighten up a ring, necklace, earrings or bracelet. Among the gemstone rings, the citrine ring will embellish your days. When it comes to gemstone earrings, citrine earrings will brighten up your face. The beautiful citrines are mounted in pendants. They will fit nicely in your neckline. We have a nice selection of citrines to find in our vintage jewelry category.
